Safety has a long tradition at Audi: 75 years ago, DKW engineers rolled a subcompact F7 down a hill in the interest of safety and caused a controlled rollover. Since this first crash test at DKW, one of the four brands from which Audi was created, Audi has regularly claimed the spotlight with new safety features.

This year, four Audi SUVs earned the 2022 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick Plus (IIHS TSP+) Award, a distinction that not many other luxury brands can claim. The award winning models are the 2022 Audi Q5, 2022 Q5 Sportback, e-tron and the e-tron Sportback.

Earning the IIHS TSP+ award is no easy feat; a vehicle must earn a score of good in six IIHS crashworthiness tests. These are the driver-side small overlap, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluation, and good – or acceptable- rated headlights standard across all trims.

Audi Jamaica has always been able to maintain the global reputation of being a safe vehicle, as it boasts the reputation of being one of two brands who have never reported a fatality on Jamaican roads. “A key part of the Audi experience is safety. Each model is designed to look out for you, your passengers and all other road users. Intuitive systems like quattro and Audi pre-sense offer dynamism and safety while delivering a unique and exclusive level of driving pleasure. Safety systems are paired six standard airbags and additional features to ensure your safety is always prioritized,” says Uche McLean, Senior Sales Manager at Audi Jamaica.

Goal Setting: Audi Aims For Safer Road Usage By 2025

Safety has always been paramount in Audi’s end user experience. In 2020, Audi set a few goals aimed at ensuring the safety of its customers and other road users is always top of mind. For example, the continuous development of Audi’s predictive assistance and safety systems and the further development of technologies surrounding assisted/automated driving are geared towards ensuring that your car’s design protects the driver, your passengers and all other road users.

These goals serve a bigger purpose though, as they align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG 3 – “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” & SDG 9 “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”.

Quality Assurance Starts With Safety

Audi attaches particular importance to producing high-quality vehicles and it continues to keep an eye on its products even after they have been delivered to customers. On the request of the Board of Management, the Product Safety Committee (APS) examines reports for delivered vehicles and initiates measures if there are any doubts as to their product safety or if a regulatory violation is suspected. In addition, the APS answers questions from authorities and consumer associations in relation to product safety.

The number of Audi models is growing steadily and body structures have become increasingly complex over the years. Crash simulations are therefore now an indispensable part of model development; more than 200 specialists at Audi are working solely on this. Each month, they perform some 20,000 crash simulations, often as much as two years before the first prototypes are even built.

Audi models are among the world’s safest cars. The brand with the four rings offers a comprehensive package of active and passive safety features in the compact class, too. The Audi A3, for instance, is available with pre-sense front and received the honour of “Euro NCAP advanced” four times in 2012, in part for these active safety systems.
